DVHS Band Council Descriptions 2017-18

Band Council Job Descriptions 2017-18

All council members must attend ALL events and performances, including optional events, weekly meetings (brunch, lunch or after school), and have fun. 


*Band Manager – 1  (prefer an upperclassmen)

  • Liaison between Director and ensembles
  • Music distribution/collection (Band = Pep Band Librarian)
  • Organize set-up/clean-up at all performances
  • Organize and take attendance at performances
  • Gather t-shirt designs for groups – facilitate ordering
  • Unlock and lock up theater and music rooms before and after performances
  • Other duties as needed or suggested


*Assistant Manager – 1-2 per class (Jazz Band, Symphonic Bands, Wind Ensemble)

  • Helps Manager with duties listed above
    • Help take attendance at performances
    • Music distribution/collection (w/section leaders)
    • Organize set-up/clean-up at all performances
    • Help design class/ensemble t-shirt


Section Leader (for all classes, several people)

  • Must be musical and responsible
  • Run sectionals
    • Intonation, rhythm, notes/fingerings
  • Equipment/uniform/music check for performances and trips
  • Music distribution/collection (help librarian)


*Librarian1 per class minumum

  • Helps with music distribution/collection
  • Makes copies if needed


Student Conductor1-2 per class

  • Can accurately and clearly conduct in 4/4, 3/4, and 2/4 with a steady beat
  • Learns all pep band songs and will conduct at least 1 at performances
  • Practices band class songs and can generally run a rehearsal in teacher’s absence
  • Helps direct/organize sectionals with Band Managers
  • Owns or can obtain a metronome and tuner


To apply for any position, you must schedule an interview time (5 min.) between Monday August 14 and Friday August 18.  Interviews will be held in the instrumental music room.  Sign up for a time on the office door.


* These positions are decided via interview with the band director

WASC Update from DVHS

WASC Update

DVHS has been preparing over the last several months for our WASC visit as part of the accreditation process for DVHS.  A huge thank you to Kerri Pike for taking the lead on this huge project.  For your information, below is the new Vision, Mission and School-wide Learner Outcomes (SLOs) that DVHS is adopting.  Thank you to all the parents that are helping in WASC by participating in various committees and groups.

What is DVHS Music Fund?

We are a Non-Profit Parent Support group for our Music students and Teachers at Dougherty Valley High School. We raise money to support all music programs (Band, Orchestra and Choir) here at DVHS. Our state and district provides us with extraordinary educators in the Music classrooms but that is all. 

DVHS Music Fund provides all the following to our Music Students here

- Sheet Music for all classes

- Instruments

- Instrument maintenance and repair

- Festival fees

- Transportation to various festivals

- Workshops with Master Clinicians for all groups

- Retreats for Orchestra and Choir

- Band Halloween Parades

- PEP Band for Football games

- Concerts

- Workshops in Leadership

All the above requires considerable amount of funds and volunteer hours. We encourage you all to join us for our monthly meetings and get involved with us.
