“When I hear people asking how we fix the education system, I tell them we need to do the opposite of what is happening, cutting budgets by cutting music programs… Ask a CEO what they are looking for in an employee and they say they need people who understand teamwork, people who are disciplined, people who understand the big picture. You know what they need? They need musicians.” – Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, MENC Centennial Congress, Orlando, Florida, June 2007
The DVHS Music program, consisting of Concert Bands (2), Symphonic Band (2), Wind Ensemble (2), Jazz Band, Orchestras (3), Concert Choir, Women’s Choir, Chamber Singers and Treble Clef is self-funded by Fund Membership Dues, fundraising and concert ticket proceeds. These funds go towards the purchase of sheet music, instruments, instrument maintenance, Music Fund scholarships to seniors and other music program expenses. The Music Fund also provides transportation to various events and competitions.
Despite compelling facts and statistics documenting the value of music education in raising test scores, improving higher education and quality of life, quality music programs do not exist with school district support alone especially during our budget crisis. “The Blues” and the support of parents are what make a high quality music program possible at DVHS.
Please join the “The Blues” and support the performing arts at DVHS.
