DVHS HOSA - Future Health Professionals interest meeting notes

HOSA—Future Health Professionals is an international student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education (HSE) Division of ACTE. HOSA's two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the healthcare industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. HOSA is the only international organization run by and for students interested in pursuing careers in the health professions. Founded in 1976, HOSA now possesses over 2,650 local chapters in 54 state associations (including chapters in Mexico, Canada, Italy, and Germany), and serves over 200,000 student members.

We have HOSA officer positions and many leadership opportunities available if you are someone who is dedicated to healthcare or wants to know more about healthcare. We wanted to make clear that unfortunately, unless you are a student currently enrolled in: Biotechnology Accelerated & Research Biotechnology Sciences Laboratory & Research Sports Medicine (Beginners or Advanced) you will not be able to become an official HOSA member. However, we will be opening most meetings to any student who is interested in learning about healthcare and gaining important skills to prepare yourself for a career in the healthcare industry. Additionally, we will work to provide outside opportunities to not only official HOSA members but also any students who show an interest and show up to meetings regularly. Sign up for Biology Olympiad (USABO)

If you are passionate about Biology and would love to compete nationally and internationally in a Biology competition, sign up for the USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) Open Exam!!  Eligibility: All interested students in grades 9 to 12 are eligible to participate in the USABO.  Sign-up in Mrs. Basu's Room (2109) with a $5 fee (donation) AND Complete student registration at: https://www.usabo-trc.org/student/register

Student Registration Deadline: January 18th, 2020. The USABO Open Exam will consist of 50 multiple choice questions in 50 minutes and will be administered tentatively on Monday, February 10, 2020 (3:15-4:15 pm) Feel free to join us for Exam prep sessions during Biology Club meetings every Thursday during lunch in Room 2109. The USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) has 4 tiers of Exams: Tier 1: Open Exam (Feb 4-14 at DVHS) Tier 2: Semifinal Exam (March 23-27 at DVHS) Tier 3: Final/National Exam (TBD) Tier 4: International Biology Exam (July 3-11 in Sasebo City, Japan) Top 10% qualifies to the semifinal round (about 500-600 people) Top 20 people of semifinal round invited to the USABO training boot camp over the summer. ​Top 4 people from the final round represent USA and is represented as IBO (International Biology Olympiad) Finalist! Each of the seven topics will be covered in the four exams: Open, Semifinal, Nationals, and IBO: Animal anatomy and physiology: 25% Cell Biology: 20% Genetics and Evolution: 20% Plant anatomy and physiology: 15% Ecology: 10% Ethology: 5% Biosystematics: 5% Main Study Resource is the Campbell Biology Textbook edition 8 or later. Volunteer with EESY to Change!

Interested in tutoring and mentoring a group of underprivileged children at a local lower-income housing unit? Join EESY to Change!

EESY to Change’s primary goal is to empower, educate, and support youth by offering them academic assistance and teaching them a habit-based curriculum. We give high school students the opportunity to volunteer at a nearby low income housing unit. Here, our members mentor a group of elementary schoolers, helping them with homework and other educational activities.

Hey all, in this Math Circle, high schoolers with an interest in computer science and data science will gain exposure to the world of data analysis, visualization, and mathematical prediction. They will be mentored by an IBM data scientist and a group of passionate individuals to solve problems with large amounts of data to build up the foundations of data science, statistics and machine learning. Using those foundational skills, students will complete an interesting and challenging final project, which they can choose to submit to prestigious competitions including the Kaggle competition.

Do you want to be a part of the DV Science Olympiad Team?

Then, show up for a tryout next Wednesday, October 16 in Mrs. Basu's room (2109) during lunch. This will be your LAST chance to tryout!  Tryouts are open to all students, regardless of your grade level and background in science. You did NOT need to attend the interest meeting to tryout; just review the presentation attached below.

LEND A HAND TO CANCER PATIENTS WITH INTERKNIT AMERICA! MEETING #2

Are YOU interested in knitting and crocheting? Want to lend a hand to cancer patients and the homeless?  Then come on down to InterKnit America's SECOND MEETING this Thursday, October 10th in Ms. Alvarez's room 9103

InterKnit America is a knitting and crocheting club dedicated to motivating, training, and coordinating members to craft what we donate, specially hand-crocheting and/or -knitting our pieces to send to people in need of warm clothes, from people in homeless shelters to patients in need of chemo-caps, who have undergone chemotherapy at cancer hospitals.  Be sure to dress to impresswe will be having our club photo on this day!  We will also be announcing our first ever WINTER FUNDRAISER!

When and where do I turn in my Club Minutes?

Minutes are to be turned in to the front of the Leadership Room (4102) on the designated due date. Please refer to the due dates which are located in the locker on right side of the page.

Can I start a club?

Students are encouraged to start new clubs. The club application process will take place in the spring of second semester for the following year. Information about the club application process will be released throughout the year.

Can I fundraise as a club?

Clubs that want to fundraise must fill out a budget form and turn it into the leadership room. Budget forms can be found in the locker located on the right of the page.

Does my advisor have to be present at our club’s fundraiser?

If your club is directly selling goods your advisor must be present. However fundraisers involving businesses and sponsors do not require your advisor to be present. See the handbook in the locker for full fundraising instructions.

Do we have to attach our sign-in sheet with our Club Minutes form?

It is not required that you attach your sign in sheet to your club minutes.

What is the best way to contact the DVHS Clubs Team?

The most direct way to contact us is by sending us an email at clubsdvhs@gmail.com. Please do not directly contact staff members or Clubs team members.
