BACKGROUND:
Before moving to California, I was a teacher of English at the senior level at Noble High School in Berwick, Maine (a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools). My responsibilities included Advanced Placement English Literature, Vocational English, and a Women’s Studies Junior and Senior Seminar. In addition, I piloted an English/Arts Academy for 45 seniors. I collaborated with four other teachers to form and interdisciplinary “academy” whose goal was to give students opportunities to connect literature, writing, art history, drawing, painting, photography, pottery, and graphic design. I was also the mentor to forty seniors for their exit exhibitions and graduation portfolios.
My educational experience is diverse. I spent several years teaching at the sophomore level on an interdisciplinary team, developing innovative and successful curriculum. I consider myself a teacher of humanities and integrate the disciplines whenever possible. I have talent and strength in many other aspects of education, such as heterogeneous grouping, differentiated instruction, including modification for exceptional learners, analytical and creative writing, formal classroom inquiry and research, and the School-to-Career movement. Guest speakers, student-inquiry projects, and service learning are some of my teaching techniques. However, my greatest pride is the rewarding relationships I have with my students.
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:
My vision of an ideal teacher is multi-faceted; I believe that a good teacher is a strong, consistent, healthy adult figure in each student’s life- an advisor, coach, and advocate all in one. I have made a commitment to strive for excellence as a teacher and as a member of our growing community.
